“When thousands upon thousands of fireflies flutter their wings before your eyes, glowing and shimmering, you realise that a summer night can be this gentle.”

Artists MAOTIK and Etienne Paquette jointly created a poetic summer-night landscape through multimedia expression, allowing the fireflies to engage in an intimate “dialogue” with the audience. The immersive scene evokes a primordial natural ecosystem.

MAOTIK constructs an organic environment by filling light bulbs with tonic water containing luminous powder and using metal rods shaped like plant branches and vines. In addition, he incorporates natural background sounds mixed with insect noises, fully presenting the atmosphere of an ecological system. Visitors are made to feel as though they are surrounded by swarms of fireflies, gaining a genuine sense of participation through their interaction with the lights.

The blue light is quiet yet dazzling. When you place your hands on the wooden interactive table and move them, the light follows the traces of your fingers through the natural environment, as if responding through a tacit greeting — it seems to understand even your smallest thoughts. MAOTIK creates an immersive environment and a sculptural interactive installation space, while also subtly demonstrating the fusion of technology and craft.

Although the title is poetic, the practical realisation of the installation involved numerous challenges. Through laser-based interaction, MAOTIK allows viewers to open vivid, blossoming flowers one by one. Audiences can also create their own works through improvised gestures, movements, and combinations of sound. Built through a parametric system of sound and visual architecture, the work offers a truly inventive creative journey.

Visitors can communicate directly with the digital world, using the movements of their hands to generate lights and abstract visual effects. The work explores the practice of bodily movement as a way to encourage physical expression and communication.

Flow
MAOTIK, 2019
Multimedia Installation

Flow is presented as a work entirely inspired by MAOTIK’s fascination with the movement of ocean waves — that passionate, unrestrained, fearless flow, which perfectly embodies the artists’ refusal to be ordinary. MAOTIK also cleverly integrates a multimedia environment, offering the audience a sensory experience that is both poetic and playful.

The rise and fall of the data simulate the undulating movement of the sea surface. The work is projected using eight different 1080p HD stereoscopic galaxy NH12 projectors, casting a 16 × 9 metre image across the walls and floor to create a vast, open visual environment that enhances the audience’s perception of physical space. These data are influenced by temperature, humidity, the positions of viewers, and the tides.

The “sea level” on display changes gradually, attempting to place the audience within a virtual universe. Here, abstraction leaves room for everyone’s daydreams. All content is generated in real time, much like a system in nature defined by a series of random generative processes. The sound design transforms the visual landscape into an auditory experience, guiding viewers toward the centre of the environment to sense its subtle shifts. Overall, the work aims to create a system driven by random generative processes, configured by a range of natural data, with ultimate control left to nature itself.

Carnovsky’s RGB Fabulous Landscapes is an ongoing project that experiments with the interaction between print colours and coloured light. These images, created through the superimposition of three different colours, produce a strikingly unexpected and slightly psychedelic effect. The interweaving and layering of colours, lines, and shapes create a dreamlike and blurred atmosphere.

When viewed through colour filters — or through coloured light, or transparent materials — the full composition of each colour layer within the static image, as well as the direction of its individual lines, can be seen clearly. The filter colours are red, green, and blue, and each of them reveals one of the three layers.

Carnovsky, Diptyque,2019

Carnovsky’s collaboration with Diptyque likewise incorporates the RGB (primary-colour) artistic approach, interpreting fantastical natural motifs and presenting a form of “nature as art” through primary-colour filters, with a striking visual impact. Using a modern artistic language, the project tells the story of a golden orchard in a highly playful and engaging way.

Through psychedelic, dynamic, and passionate imagery, Carnovsky brings this unparalleled Eden vividly to life. Different primary colours and scenes are painted onto the wall in three separate colour layers, and coloured filters are then used to project different hues of light onto the surface, revealing different “wallpaper” patterns. When each work is viewed through the three filter layers, the audience sees different motifs and layers emerge — making it a true dual pleasure that combines visual and olfactory experience.
